The Formula Explained
Glycemic load estimates the blood-sugar impact of an actual serving of food. It is computed as:
GL = (GI × available carbohydrate in grams) ÷ 100
Because regular soda contains almost no fat, protein, or fibre, nearly all of its carbohydrate is sugar. That means the grams of sugar from the label are effectively the available carbohydrate you should plug into the equation. The glycemic index (GI) is a 0–100 scale that ranks how quickly a carbohydrate-containing food raises blood glucose compared with pure glucose (GI 100). - For fountain drinks, portion sizes vary widely — most fast-food “medium” cups hold 21–32 oz. If you don’t know the exact grams, use 32 g of sugar per 12 oz as a rough estimate for regular cola.
- Use the % of 50 g daily limit as a budgeting tool. If a soda hits 78% of the reference, you have very little room for other added sugars that day.

Is diet soda really GL 0?
In terms of carbohydrate-based glycemic load, yes — zero-sugar sodas contain negligible available carbohydrate, so the calculated GL is essentially 0. This does not mean diet soda is universally “healthy”; the calculator simply measures one specific metric.
Why does the WHO recommend 50 g of free sugars?
The World Health Organization recommends that adults and children reduce daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of total energy, with 5% as a conditional target. For a 2,000-calorie diet, 10% is about 50 g. This calculator uses 50 g as the reference for the percentage display.
Can I use this for other sweet drinks?
