Protein in Food

Barley is one of the oldest cultivated grains and a quietly excellent source of plant protein. A 100 g portion of raw hulled barley provides about 12.5 g of protein, while pearled barley and barley flour are close behind. Because protein content varies with the form and whether the grain is cooked, it helps to have a dedicated tool that applies the right protein density to your actual portion.

This calculator lets you select the barley form you are using โ€” raw pearled, hulled, flour, flakes, or cooked pearled barley โ€” then enter your portion in grams or ounces. It instantly returns the grams of protein, the protein’s calorie contribution, and the share of the Reference Daily Intake of 50 g.

Whether you are meal-prepping grain bowls, boosting baked goods with barley flour, or tracking macronutrients for fitness goals, this tool makes accurate barley protein math quick and simple.

How It Works

The protein density of barley changes with the form you choose. Raw pearled barley contains roughly 9.9 g of protein per 100 g, while hulled barley is closer to 12.5 g. Barley flour, flakes, and cooked barley each have their own density, so the calculator uses a different conversion factor for every option in the menu. The same formula works for any food with a known per-100 g protein value, and the tool does the unit conversion and percentage calculation for you.

The formula is simple:

Protein (g) = portion weight (g) ร— protein density (g per 100 g) รท 100

After protein is calculated, the tool estimates the energy contribution from protein at 4 kcal per gram and compares the result with the FDA reference value of 50 g of protein per day.

These are approximate values from USDA nutrition data; individual products can vary slightly.

Barley formProtein per 100 gCommon uses
Pearled barley, raw9.9 gSoups, stews, pilafs
Hulled barley, raw12.5 gWhole-grain salads, cereals
Barley flour10.5 gBaking, thickeners
Barley flakes10.9 gPorridge, granola
Pearled barley, cooked3.6 gCooked side dishes

Worked Examples

Example 1: 150 g cooked pearled barley. Protein = 150 ร— 3.6 รท 100 = 5.4 g. That equals about 22 kcal from protein and roughly 11% of the 50 g daily reference.

Example 2: 100 g raw hulled barley. Protein = 100 ร— 12.5 รท 100 = 12.5 g. That is about 50 kcal from protein and 25% of the daily reference. Notice how the same 100 g portion produces very different numbers in raw versus cooked form.

Tips for Accurate Portions

Barley works well in grain bowls, soups, salads, and baked goods. Since its protein content is modest, pair it with beans, legumes, dairy, eggs, or tofu in the same meal. In yeast breads, replace no more than about 25% of the wheat flour with barley flour to avoid a dense crumb.

  • Weigh barley in the same form you are eating. If the package says dry weight, weigh it dry; if you are tracking a cooked meal, weigh the cooked portion.
  • Use a digital gram scale for consistent results. Volume measurements like cups vary depending on how tightly the grain is packed.
  • Cereal grains are lower in the amino acid lysine. Pair barley with beans, lentils, dairy, or soy to round out the protein profile in a meal.
  • Check the nutrition label when available, because some brands fortify or mill barley differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hulled barley healthier than pearled barley? Hulled barley keeps more of the bran and has slightly more protein and fiber. Pearled barley cooks faster and has a softer texture, but a little less protein and fiber.

Why does cooked barley have so much less protein per 100 g? Cooking adds water, so 100 g of cooked barley contains fewer dry solids than 100 g of raw barley. The protein is not destroyed; it is simply diluted by water.

How much protein is in one cooked cup? A metric cup of cooked pearled barley weighs about 157 g and provides about 5.6 g of protein. The calculator's cooked preset makes this easy to check for any portion.

Is barley gluten-free? No. Barley contains gluten and is not suitable for people with celiac disease. Choose certified gluten-free grains if you need to avoid gluten.
