The Math Behind the Estimate

This calculator uses the MET (metabolic equivalent of task) method, the same framework used in physical activity research. One MET equals the energy cost of sitting quietly, which is roughly 3.5 ml of oxygen per kilogram per minute. Any activity with a MET value above 1 burns more energy than resting.

Total calories are calculated with this formula:

Calories burned = MET value × body weight (kg) × duration (hours)

For example, a 60 kg person doing 30 minutes of stability ball core work at MET 3.5 would burn 3.5 × 60 × 0.5 = 105 kcal. That total is then multiplied by the fat energy share you selected. If we use a 50% share, fat calories become 105 × 0.5 = 52.5 kcal.

Step 3: 66 ÷ 7.7 = 8.6 g fat burned.

If the same person chose the gentle stretch option at MET 2.3 for 30 minutes, the result would be only 2.3 × 75 × 0.5 = 86 kcal total, and with a 65% fat share it would be 86 × 0.65 = 56 kcal from fat, or about 7.3 g. Notice that a gentler session can still produce a meaningful fat contribution when the fat share is higher.
