How the Estimate Is Calculated

This calculator uses the standard metabolic equivalent (MET) formula used by exercise scientists:

Calories = MET × 3.5 × weight in kilograms × minutes ÷ 200

One MET is the energy your body uses at rest. A MET of 8 means you are consuming oxygen at roughly eight times your resting rate during vigorous snorkeling. The 3.5 in the formula represents resting oxygen consumption in milliliters per kilogram per minute, and dividing by 200 converts the result into calories. The vigorous snorkeling MET value comes from the Compendium of Physical Activities, a widely used reference for physical activity intensity.

Water temperature is handled as a separate compensation. Studies show thermogenesis and shivering in cool water can raise energy expenditure by 5–15%. Factors That Affect Accuracy

  • Body composition: Muscle burns more energy at the same size than fat does, so a highly fit individual may exceed the estimate for a given MET.
  • Water temperature and exposure: On top of shivering, the body burns energy to maintain core temperature in cold water. The adjustment in this calculator only accounts for a small part of this.
  • Current and waves: Working against a current significantly increases effort, but being pushed around by choppy water can also raise your heart rate more than calm conditions.
  • Equipment: Large fins add leg resistance, and a poorly fitting mask or wetsuit can increase the energy cost of every movement.
