The MET Formula Behind the Numbers

MET stands for metabolic equivalent of task. One MET is roughly the energy your body burns while sitting quietly — about 3.5 milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute. When you exercise at 4 METs, you're using about four times the energy of resting. The standard formula used by exercise scientists is:

Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200

The 200 in the denominator converts oxygen consumption into calories. Total calories are simply the per-minute value multiplied by the duration of your workout in minutes. Notice that body weight appears directly in the formula, which is why a heavier person burns more calories than a lighter person doing the same Bosu movement at the same intensity.
