Formula and Calculation Method

This calculator uses the standard MET (metabolic equivalent) method. One MET is roughly the energy cost of sitting quietly, about 3.5 ml of oxygen per kilogram per minute. The core formula is:

Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body mass (kg) ÷ 200.
To get calories per mile, the calculator converts pace to speed, computes calories per hour, then divides by miles per hour.

First, pace is converted to speed in meters per minute. The base walking MET is estimated with the level-ground walking equation: METbase = (0.1 × speed in m/min + 3.5) ÷ 3.5. Added load is then included as roughly +0.1 MET per kilogram of extra weight carried. Finally, the terrain multiplier adjusts the total MET: flat ≈ 1.00, rolling ≈ 1.15, and hilly ≈ 1.30. Factors That Affect Accuracy
